While designing and building a home theater for your own house can be in the realm of some people, for most of the buying public it is wise to get help from a professional.

That being said, if you do decide you want to tackle the job you need to decide just how much of the project you want to bite off. There are many stages of this project that are well within the capability of a reasonable handy man or women. But proper planning and research are essential to the successful completion of the project.

For instance, most home theaters are going to need a dedicated electrical source for the components.

The last thing you want is the screen to jump every time the AC comes on or someone turns on an appliance. A circuit that will just handle the electrical needs of the home theater equipment is easily installed by an electrician but may be overwhelming for the weekend warrior.

On the other hand installing carpeting, wall coverings, painting and installing the seating can be well within the capabilities of a reasonable competent person.

Somewhere in the middle will fall the part where you need to bring in the components and arrange and hook them up properly. This can be done by the do-it-yourselfer but it will require a bit of research and reading before you attempt it. Even if you do elect to do this stage yourself at the very least you should bring in a pro to do the final tune-up and check all the connections to make sure you got it right.

Setting up and building a home theater can be a very rewarding experience and will definitely add value to your home, but if it isn’t done right you will regret the decision every time you pass the home theater room.

The home theater receiver or AV receiver, as some would term it, is the central unit of your home theater system. Without it, all your other components would probably not be able to deliver. The receiver receives input so you won’t have to purchase components such as the Preamp, Tuner and multi-channel amplifier, separately to give output.

The receiver typically does what the Preamp, Tuner and multi-channel amplifier do and certainly not by compromising quality. You will still be looking at the same quality if you had purchased all three components individually, but one thing’s for sure, you definitely save quite a bit with buying just a receiver to do the job.

For those who are mindful of their budget and expenditure, a receiver would certainly serve them well. On the other hand, for those who have the capacity to and wish to splurge thousands on their home theater system, are certainly free to buy each component separately.

So what should you be looking out for in a home theater receiver?

Between a wireless receiver and a regular one, there are differences and you are sure to see the pros and cons with each one. Hence, you will need to find out as much as you can about them before you head out to the nearest electronics store, shopping for a receiver.

Also, when it comes to wattage, do not allow yourself to be fooled by the numbers on the side of the receiver box. Though watts are important, it is always true that a receiver with a higher wattage indicates more power and better sound quality. You will then have to consider other factors such as the distortion factor, which means the louder the decibels, the less clearly you can hear what’s being played.

A receiver is built to work together with the other components in your home theater system and you will be certain to want good and clear sound from the receiver you are about to spend hardearned money on. Therefore, be sure to consider the signal to noise ratio, instead of just the wattage. The signal to noise ratio allows you to compare the signal to the background noise.

You will also want to pay attention to a receiver’s ability to decode the latest audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio which are the best sounding audio codecs now. Before you spend any money on a home theater receiver, do your homework. Check product reviews and make sure that you’re getting the best your money can buy. Make sure you take the time to check out how the receiver handles before you buy.

Kenneth Atkinson is a sound engineer by training and is an avid home theater enthusiast. He uses primarily Denon gear in his own home theater setup. You can read his current reviews of Denon AV receivers is his home theater review site.

Audio Technica AT-LP60USB Fully Automatic Belt Driven Turntable with USB Port Best Review

This has recently gone up in price, even apart from the Gold Box Special that greeted me. In a way, I wish I’d seen the higher price, which would have discouraged me from ordering so quickly. I remember when, in the ’70s, it cost more to replace a Shure V-15 Type II cartridge than to purchase this turntable, which comes complete with cartridge, stylus, and 4 different connecting cables to cover just about all situations, even those for customers without a receiver/amplifier. It wasn’t long before, in the ’80s, the elliptical stylus itself went for over a hundred, eventually taken off the market by Shure due to the scarcity of its rare and costly constituent.

The point: for 60 to 90 bucks, you should not expect anything close to a genuine audiophile turntable–even though the machine includes auto tone arm lift, two instruction manuals, four well-made cables, cartridge and stylus. But the feature missing with this turntable, the one reason I wish I hadn’t ordered it and had waited to purchase the next model up, is a counterweight for achieving precise tone arm balance as well as an anti-skating control for reducing pressure (and distortion) on the inside grooves of the vinyl LP, especially the tracks closest to the middle hole.

Nevertheless, given the absence of a counter-weighted tone arm and anti-skating control, this turntable does a highly competent job of tracking most recordings. In fact, it performs better than both of the ailing industry-standard, professional Stanton turntables that were proving increasingly problematic at the station. Also, the tracking pressure that I measured is less than 2 and a half grams, light enough to prevent the stylus from eating up your vinyl (at least not until after 2-3 playings).

The unit comes with built-in preamp, so not only does it not require an amp with a phono jack, but it doesn’t require any amp beyond the one in your computer if your primary consideration is converting vinyl to digital. A couple of things to be aware of: the lift on the tone arm is too small to be of use for manual placement. You’ll need to be comfortable with the automatic lift mechanism or forget about picking up and dropping down the tone arm with any semblance of accuracy. Also, in back is an all-important lever that switches the unit from “phono” to “line” connection. If you’re using the unit without an amp with phono jack (beginning in the ’90s, cost-conscious manufacturers began leaving them off of receivers and amps, though with the comeback of vinyl we’ve seen the reappearance of phono jacks), be sure to set the switch to “line.” The same holds true if your connection involves use of any of the optional cables and connectors that are included with the turntable.

The turntable tracks quite nicely from what I’ve seen, and is worth the low cost. Still, before investing in a USB unit–without or without phono connectors–you may simply wish to save up for the best “conventional” turntable along with an amplifier or receiver that has a phono jack. That way you’ll have a better chance of scoring some of the audiophile niceties mentioned above, and connection to your computer will be no problem–whether you have an 1/8″ familiar audio jack or an adapter that will transform RCA into USB cables.

The software included with the turntable is Audacity–a respected freeware program that’s capable of doing an excellent job but is not known for being the most user-friendly program. Other possibilities are Cool Edit (for PC users); Spin Doctor or Sound Studio (Mac users). Once you’ve converted a couple of LPs, it’s a piece of cake–except for the potential of allowing the process to consume all of your time and life. (Try to resist the temptation to make up your own CDs, complete with jewel cases, printed front and back covers and spines, disc centers, booklets, photos, inserts, etc. Another not inconsiderable expense–in time as well as money.)

Cerwin Vega! VE-28S Dual 8″ Powered Subwoofer Best Review

I would like to contribute and provide a review for this sub since there is not much out there.

I upgraded from a Yamaha yst-215 8 subwoofer. I purchased this sub because it fits in the discrete spot where my wife accepts it at less than 10′ width. She is very decore picky. If I could spend more I probably would of went with a velodyne minivee 8 inch sub.

My system
Harman Kardon AVR 347
Polk SurroundBar50
Klipsch KHC-6 in ceiling speakers as rears.
Cerwin Vega VE-28s
PS3
Samsung 52 lcd “71″ series

The first I thing I noticed when connecting the VE-28s is an annoying humming sound. It drove me crazy and I almost considered retuning this sub. Did not have this problem on my old sub. Yahoo Answers say to try using a 3 to 2 prong plug adapter. It actually worked! 50 cents well spent. Some argue it is not recommended to do this but I simply don’t feel like troubleshooting a ground loop problem and want to play with the sub!

Music,
I felt the bass was not tight enough for rock type music. It sounded mushy. Wasn’t crisp. My hip hop and techno tracks sounds great. I think sealed subs are best for music applications.
I tried the sock in the port method to tighten up the bass a little. It did help but it took away the subs efficiency and did not produce a strong bass without the sock. I usually have the volume knob 50% to avoid distortion. With the sock I had to increase volume and it introduced distortion. The sock method worked well at low easy listing volumes and high amplification.

Home Theater,
This is where I think this sub performs best. With its a ported design (huge 4 inch port). It hits lows and booms well with home theater tracks.

I’ve watch these blu-ray titles so far with this sub.
CloverField – The thumps and explosions were very earth shaking. I can literally feel the socks shake on my ankles and it feels as if there is a thumping monster in my backyard.
Beowulf -The scene where Beowulf battles the dragon the bass rattles the china on its shelves in the kitchen which is a good distance away. Sounds very good.

Overall this sub is a much improvement over my last sub. I haven’t been exposed to allot of subs but I can say that I am satisfied with this sub for the application that I am using it for. The price tag is very fair and won’t break the bank as allot of subs out there.

Great amp… but beware! – Merrick – Vienna, VA
I have been using CV products since my first pair of D5’s in the early 80’s. They are simply fantastic speakers. And, with qualifications, this subwoofer is no exception. The performance is amazing… when it works. The problem is with the amplifier. There is a flaw in the design and poor support from CV. I bought my September 2008. By Tannksgiving the amp had blown. I tried in vane to get a local shop listed as a service center to repair the amp and was ridiculed by the staff and offered a subwoofer for four times the price as a “real speaker.” I was forced to ship the speaker (at my expense) back to CV in Florida and waited three months to get it back. Within six months the new amp blew out as well.
I’ve tried to contact CV multiple times and have been ignored so far. Finally, I found the following. Google “Help fixing Cerwin Vega ve28s” and follow the AudioKarma link. Read the entire thread. This was a known problem for CV with a solution posted no later than June 2007. And the repair I paid shipping charges and waited several months for was accomplished by replacing my bad amp with a “new” replacement amp that predated the posted fix and hadn’t been updated.
I ordered the replacement parts online and so far everything works perfectly. Great amp… finally.

If you aren’t willing to risk getting a subwoofer off the shelf that requires this fix and are also willing to perform it yourself I sadly recommend not getting this item.

But for this, I would give the subwoofer five stars. It actually deserves one star, but since I was able to fix it I gave it three.

FOR THE MUSIC LOVER…AND EVERYONE ELSE – Thomas D. Christianson – Ashland, WI United States
Before making this purchase, I tried to go cheap and bought the “POLK AUDIO 10″ MONITOR”. It was D.O.A. right out of the box! So, having not learned my lesson, I went ahead and bought the “SONY SA-3000 12″. It sounded as terrible as it looked. I worked with it for 3 weeks, and could not get any acceptable sound. Then I decided to spend a bit more and purchased this “CERWIN-VEGA! VE-28S”(finally learned my lesson)! Hook up was pretty easy, and I had it adjusted into my system in about 5 min. It looks very elegant and classie in my living room. As other reviewers have testified, it is great for DVDs and BLU-RAY. However, I am a music lover and use mine mostly for that purpose, and it sounds wonderful. I listen mainly to classic rock, big band, blues, and symphonic. It has deep rich bass, which is also very lively and tight(the perfect combination to make your music collection come alive). I have been using subs for about 15 years, and have owned around a dozen different quality brands,(some costing over twice as much as this one). I mention that because this sub is proving itself to be the finest sounding of them all. Another reviewer said he sold his speakers and replaced them all with “CERWIN-VEGA!” after hearing this subwoofer. Sounds like an excellent idea to me. I’ll be doing the same, just as soon as I can talk my lovely lady into it. One last thought here. It has been my experience that the subs with 8″ to 10″ cones are best for music, while the subs with larger cones do better for home theater applications…This sub does it all. Highly recommended!
Peace,
Tom

Great while it works, but don’t expect it to last. – Randle McMurphy – Macon, GA, USA
I bought this item in February of ‘07 for my home theatre system. Swank. Basstacular. Come July, the thing starts making this funny noise when it’s in “Standby” mode. Sort of a white-noise growl-y rumble. Think of far-off thunder and you’ll be close. Awesome when your Harley Hog makes that noise, not so great when your subwoofer starts making it at 3:00 in the morning when it’s not even supposed to be switched on.

Okay, so I checked around, found a service center in Atlanta (BTW – I live in Middle GA) that can do warranty work. Took it to them, they kept it a month, didn’t bother calling me back. Finally called them, they said it was fixed, I went and got it. THEY’D NEVER EVEN OPENED THE CASE. So – obviously – not fixed. I called and complained, got so ticked off I finally just left it unplugged and said “…to heck with it.” Decided in November that I wanted to get it fixed, so I took it to a shop in Columbus, who kept it for TWO MONTHS before calling me to say that they couldn’t fix it, I should just come get it and ship it back to Cerwin-Vega in Florida.

Okay, so I did that. C-V kept the thing three weeks, then sent me a replacement unit. Got this replacement in late January of this 2008. Thing has worked fine ever since. No problems. No complaints.

It’s now July of ‘08, and guess what?

The new sub is doing EXACTLY what the old one did. And, before anyone says anything, yes, I have tried it with different systems. It makes the noise regardless of which receiver it’s plugged into, and it even makes it when it’s not plugged into anything.

So – I’m telling everyone I know. If you’re speaker shopping, stay away from Cerwin-Vega. Their products are defective and their service centers are completely incompetent.

We had our home built in 2004. During this period, my husband started talking about having a theater room. I’d appease his whimsical fancy and say, “Sure that sounds great.” never really believing we ever would. Really! He still has a super charger in the basement thats waiting to be put into the Camaro that’s sitting in the garage all covered up. (While my car sits out in the cold, I might add). OH, but that’s another story.

We’re just your average everyday couple, eking out a living in the daily grind. Building a theater room can cost A LOT of moolah! I thought things like that were only for the upper class.

My husband BELIEVED! In fact we have a placard that reads “BELIEVE” sitting in front to the screen in the theater room. I know, sounds corny, but it really can be done.

Between February and May of 2007, we built our theater room, and we did it for under $5,000.00. YEP! This is not a typo as you’ll see farther down in the article. We could have saved even more if we were savvy enough to hook it all up, but we outsourced that part of the project. All those wires freak me out! After getting familiar with the components and such, I believe now, we would not at have much trouble hooking it all up ourselves, but live and learn!

When we had the house built, we had one room in the basement built with no windows in anticipation of this ‘theater room’ — (“Yes, Dear. That’s nice Dear”).

When my husband starts researching, we research! We have oodles of websites bookmarked. We have lists for this and lists for that. We have drawings and renderings and price lists and budgets. We have this item compared to that item, compared to that item, and so on and so on and so on…..

We shop and compare prices. We always do our homework before shopping. Some of the initial decisions had to be rethought and changed or adjusted to fit, but in the end, it all worked great!
